What French left can learn from New Labour

Tony Blair is tottering. He will quit inside a year at the very outside. The government he leads is currently some way behind the Conservative opposition in the polls. In these circumstances, what could the French left possibly learn from the policies of Labour in the UK? Well, the answer is: a lot. Under Tony Blair, the centre-left has won three successive elections. It has had longer in power than any left of centre government in Europe outside of Sweden. Blair's period of government looks set to come to an end in unhappy circumstances for him. But unless the party succumbs to internal squabbles, under a new leader it could very well go on to win yet a fourth term of office.

Why multiculturalism should not be abandonned

In an article published in the Observer newspaper recently, a reporter writes of his visit to a local mosque. It was not just any mosque, but one frequented by some of the British Muslims held by the police in the plot to bring down several transatlantic planes. The reporter talks of meeting two TV teams at the mosque. One, from the US, came to try to find out why the UK is a hotbed of Muslim violence; the other team, which was French, was there to report upon the collapse of the British model of integration.

Why Mrs Royal is right not to demonize Tony Blair

Having been asked to write an article about Segolene Royal, I started by checking about her on Google. The first heading that came up said 'Buy Segolene Royal on e Bay'. I don't suppose she really is for sale, but in a way the item seemed to me appropriate. E Bay is a prime example of the new economy, the advance of information technology and globalisation. These are changes sweeping though all Western societies, but ones to which France is finding it particularly hard to adapt.
